How was the algorithm created?
I conducted market research across multiple data sources spanning both American and international markets. I analyzed publicly available information from 20 large school districts in the United States and internationally and supplemented this with data provided by interviewing 25-30 international professional learning consultants. Additionally, I conducted direct outreach including a brief survey with 50 professional learning facilitators across different regions, interviews with 5-8 district professional development coordinators from various countries, and contacted 3-5 established consulting firms operating in multiple markets.
Through separate regional studies, I uncovered important nuances between developing and developed countries, as well as distinctions between rural, suburban, and metropolitan areas.
High-cost cities like New York City, Toronto, and Washington D.C. showed markedly different rate structures compared to smaller communities. This research enabled me to identify key patterns including rate ranges by experience level, service type, and geographic context, along with critical factors that influence pricing such as local cost of living, travel requirements, materials development, and customization needs.
The formula I’m using incorporates these variables to generate personalized rate recommendations that reflect regional market conditions, ensuring consultants can price their services competitively while accounting for local economic factors and the specific requirements of each engagement.
I originally built this as a spreadsheet for my own use because I was tired of inconsistent pricing and second-guessing myself. When other consultants saw it and wanted copies, I realized the research and framework I’d developed had broader value.
